CPRS Training Program
For basic information on the process to become a Maryland Peer Recovery Support Specialist, watch this video:
Peer Recovery Specialists are people in recovery from substance use and/or mental health disorders, family members and allies. VoH Peers support individuals in chaotic drug use, those preparing for change, those seeking treatment and those in recovery. Using motivational interviewing, Peers engage with people who use drugs to help support and sustain self-directed change. All Peers must have at least 2 years verifiable recovery if in recovery or if they are a family member. Incorporating trained Peers into an organization supports a trauma informed care approach to treatment and services.
Voices of Hope, Inc. is offering the full curriculum, internships, exam preparation, and supervision to qualified individuals to become a Maryland Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS). This classification is viewed as the title for the peer recovery support worker primarily involved in providing recovery support services to individuals living with behavioral health disorders. This credential is governed by the Maryland Behavioral-health Professional Certification Board, as a consortium member of the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC). This is a reciprocal credential offered at the international level. Peer Recovery Support Specialists are part of an evidence-based profession that improves outcomes of behavioral health treatment and interventions.
Through training, individuals are given the skills, knowledge, and abilities to transform that lived experience into the helping profession. Certified Peer Recovery Specialists are employed by medical organizations, the justice system, in public health and community-based organizations.
CPRS Training includes 500 hours of Peer internship, 30 hours of approved Registered Peer Supervision and includes individualized preparation and support for the CPRS Exam and fee. Internship hours can be completed at a part-time or full-time basis.

Yes. Voices of Hope is listed on the MABPCB site as the Organization/Provider for multiple CPRS-domain trainings (e.g., CCAR RCA, Ethics 2.0, Continuum of Care), with Provider ID EP-65377-R2—which means those trainings are MABPCB-approved and count toward CPRS requirements.
-
50 hours total, distributed as: Advocacy (10) • Ethics (16) • Mentoring/Education (10) • Recovery/Wellness (10) • Harm Reduction (4).

-
You must complete 30 hours of supervision by a Registered Peer Supervisor (RPS): 5 hours in each domain (Advocacy, Ethics, Mentoring/Education, Recovery/Wellness, Harm Reduction) + 5 General. Ask your employer or search MABPCB for RPS options. VoH also provides Group Supervisions, virtually, with a Registered Peer Supervisor every Wednesday afternoon, called Mentorship Moments.

-
Yes. Effective Sept 1, 2025, MABPCB notes the inclusion of Harm Reduction in the domain process for the exam and other updates. Always check MABPCB for the latest. description
-
The IC&RC provides the exam, but as an enrollee of the training program this will include individualized exam preparation and the exam fee. We’ll walk you through scheduling once you’re eligible.
-
Varies by schedule and when you complete hours/supervision. Many learners take ~6 months to finish all components.
-
MABPCB is part of IC&RC, which means reciprocity is often possible, but each state’s board has its own process/fees. Contact the destination state’s board.
-
Because you must meet the domain minimums (Q1). Having 50 hours spread unevenly won’t qualify until each domain minimum is satisfied.
-
No, you cannot use the same training already used for certification. MABPCB requires 20 CEUs every 2 years, including a single 6-hour Ethics course in that cycle (not split across multiple ethics mini-courses). Choose new learning each cycle.
-
For VoH-owned webinars and trainings, you’ll complete a post-test via VoH, then an eval via VoH Protraxx; certificates are released after that. CCAR courses appear in CCAR Protraxx.
-
The program cost is roughly $2,590. Most participants use workforce funding (WIOA) via their local American Job Center or a similar grant program, so that the training is essentially free to you as the student.
-
Register with your county’s American Job Center, schedule to attend that workcenters orientation, and once assigned an Employment Specialist/Counselor, request funding for the “Voices of Hope Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Training Program,” and send us your funding verification once you receive it to finalize enrollment.
-
Yes—many learners attend free webinars or open trainings while funding is processing. Although our program enrollees receive priority registration for all trainings, once you submit the Interest Form, you will be added to our Training Email ListServ. You will then receive email notifications, once a training becomes open for registration. But due to the number of subscribers to our Training Email ListServ, there is no guarantee of a seat. We’ll finalize your full enrollment once funding is verified.
-
Yes—some employers fund certification training. If you’re employed, ask your HR department; otherwise, we’ll direct you to American Job Centers for WIOA funding pathways.
-
Almost all classes are live on Zoom. You must join from a computer or tablet with working mic and camera on (*no cellphones*), be on time, and stay engaged the entire session.
-
Many courses run on consecutive days; attendance for all dates is required. If you miss time, you will not receive credit, and you will need to reschedule for the next offering of that training.
-
If you aren’t able to obtain funding through a workforce center or grant, we can suggest a few alternative avenues. Also, if you were denied by one funding source, it may be worth checking with another local job center or funding program; sometimes eligibility criteria differ. Feel free to reach out to us for guidance if you’re having trouble securing funding—we want to help you find a path to certification one way or another.
For any inquiries that you may have that are not in our FAQ, please feel free to book a call or a meet with our Training Program Coordinator.
Thank you!
