From Setback to Strength: Celebrating Rachael Gingrich’s CHW Certification Journey

Rachael Gingrich’s journey to becoming a Certified Community Health Worker is one of resilience, heart, and real determination.

Before entering the CHW training program, Rachael had spent eight years as a stay-at-home mom. When she first began pursuing the program in 2024, life threw her a brutal setback—she suffered an accident and broke her neck, forcing her to pause her progress for several months while she healed. For a lot of people, that kind of interruption could have been enough to make them walk away. Rachael did the opposite. She came back.

When she restarted her pursuit of certification, she did so with purpose. Her goal was not just to complete a program or earn a credential. She wanted to build the skills needed to help others overcome isolation, loneliness, and despair—the same kind of struggles that recovery and healing had taught her to face with courage and hope.

That purpose showed up in the way she approached the CHW program. Rachael found deep value in learning about harm reduction and motivational interviewing, especially the power of meeting people where they are without leaving them stuck there. She understood that real support is not about judgment or pressure. It is about connection, compassion, and helping people take their next step when they are ready.

What has always stood out about Rachael is the heart she brings to the work. Her compassion and empathy are not surface-level traits. They are part of who she is. Even before becoming a member of the Voices of Hope team, Rachael was already committed to growing in the recovery field and serving her community. Through support from the Susquehanna Workforce Network, she was already on her way toward becoming a CHW, and she stayed determined and persistent in educating herself and strengthening the skills she knew could make a difference in the lives of others.

Rachael’s achievement is worth celebrating not only because she earned her certification, but because of what it represents. It represents perseverance after injury. It represents choosing purpose after pain. It represents a woman who refused to let a setback write the end of her story.

At Voices of Hope Maryland, it has been an honor to have Rachael as both a student in the CHW Certification Training Program and as a member of our team. She has continued to show that when compassion is paired with determination, powerful things happen. Her journey reflects the kind of impact that grows when lived experience, recovery, and service come together.

And the beautiful part is this: Rachael’s journey does not stop here.

She is already continuing her growth and building on this milestone by working toward her certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist. That next step speaks volumes. It shows that for Rachael, this work is not just a job title or a one-time accomplishment. It is a calling.

We are proud to celebrate Rachael Gingrich and all that she has accomplished. Her story is a reminder that healing can become purpose, setbacks can become fuel, and the path forward can still be powerful even when it has not been easy.

As Rachael shared in her own words, her recovery and healing brought her to a place where she now wants to help others find peace and joy along their own path. That is exactly what this achievement represents—and exactly why her story matters.

Congratulations, Rachael — your hard work, heart, and dedication are inspiring, and this milestone is so well deserved.
